Stop Rules and Safer Decisions

trading should be emotions-free

Phase 4: Review & protect · 7 min

Build money, time and wellbeing boundaries—and know where to seek support before pressure escalates.

By the end, you can:

  • Recognize chasing, concealment and loss-of-control warning signs.
  • Write stop rules that do not depend on willpower in the moment.
  • Know how to step away and find independent support.

Safety systems are decided before pressure arrives. Trading stop rules should work the same way.

Capital protection includes the person

A technically defined stop does not protect you if you keep reopening positions, increase size to recover a loss or deposit money that was needed elsewhere. The safety plan must cover money, time and decision-making—not only chart levels.

Non-negotiable boundaries

  • Never trade with borrowed money or money needed for living costs.
  • Set a session time limit and maximum loss before opening the platform.
  • Do not increase risk to recover a prior loss.
  • Stop when tired, distressed, intoxicated, angry or unable to follow the written plan.
  • Keep demo and live results separate; completing a course is not evidence of live readiness.

Warning signs deserve action

Warning signs can include chasing losses, hiding activity, borrowing or selling things to fund trading, being unable to stop, neglecting work or relationships, or feeling anxious and preoccupied. You do not need to reach a particular count before asking for help.

If control is slipping, stop access first

Close the platform, do not deposit, tell someone you trust, and use available payment blocks, account limits or self-exclusion controls. Product menus change, so ask the platform’s support team for the current permanent restriction options and keep written confirmation.

A four-step interruption plan

  1. Break the loop. Close the app and move away from the device.
  2. Block new money. Do not make a recovery deposit; use bank or payment blocks where available.
  3. Add another person. Contact someone you trust and say clearly what is happening.
  4. Use independent support. Gambling Therapy offers free global information and support in multiple languages. If you may harm yourself or someone else, contact your local emergency services now.

Visit Gambling Therapy for global support. You can also use your national health service or a locally regulated gambling-support organization.

What course completion means

Finishing these lessons means you have reviewed a beginner framework for products, charts, risk, demo testing, timing, journaling and stop rules. It is not a qualification, personalized advice or a statement that trading is suitable for you. Continuing in demo mode—or deciding not to trade—is a valid outcome.

Demo exercise

Practice: write the stop plan while calm

Write where your session ends, what financial limit cannot be crossed, which warning signs trigger an immediate stop, how access or deposits can be blocked, and the name of one person or support service you will contact. Store the plan somewhere visible outside the trading app.
